29th March.Warrington 6 Harlequins 8: Harlequins inflicted Warrington's first home defeat of the season as they triumphed in dreadful conditions. An abysmal pitch made flowing rugby impossible, the only try of the first half coming when Gareth Haggerty intercepted a Warrington pass. With 11 minutes left, Paul Johnson put Warrington on the scoreboard and the goal cut the gap to two points. Warrington piled everything into attack but when Andy Bracek knocked-on, their last chance of victory slipped away. But with half-time approaching, Haggerty intercepted Monaghan's pass to Chris Hicks and ploughed through the thick mud to score his first try for Quins under the sticks, with Paul adding the afters. Warrington upped the pace after the break piling everything into attack but it took until the last 15 minutes for Quins to finally crack, as Johnson twisted out of a tackle to spin over in the right-hand corner. Monaghan came close to a quick second try until another superbly-timed tackle by Paul, who was inspirational for the visitors. source bbc

Paul Cullen: "We were simply very poor. Our handling was poor and our completion was absolutely awful - and we paid the price for it. "Unfortunately that was all we had left in us over the Easter period, but we're not going to blame fatigue. That was a poor performance. "Some of the mistakes we made were quite unbelievable. We lost our shape and we lost our structure - and from that we forced plays that were not working for us. We're very frustrated."

28th March. After picking up a calf injury in pre-season wily halfback Micahel Monaghan is set to return to the Wolves halves this weekend after taking some time to rest the injured leg. "It's been a case of resting it, for the last month I've been trying to get through it and I wasn't really training, just turning up on the weekend and playing. With the short easter programme it was a good chance to get a week or twos rest." Looking forward to this weekends clash with the club from the capital Michael commented, "It'll be a tough game and we're back at home so that's good, hopefully the weathe holds out and we'll get a good game of footy."wolfweb

Debut boy :Back rowers Mitchell and Blythe made their Super League debuts last season, but 17-year-old former Crosfields amateur Neal was not named in the Super League squad at the start of the season. England under 17s prop Neal has had a rapid rise to prominence after featuring in the autumn Academy internationals.

He said: Matt King "we can do better" "The results have been good but there are a lot of things we have to get right pretty quickly otherwise we're going to get hurt. advertisement "I still believe we're a really good footy team and I believe we've got the results we've deserved but I think we could be getting them a lot easier than we have been doing. "We shouldn't be playing the way we're playing" Matt King "We're happy with the two points we got out of Monday's game but we've got to improve."We can't be happy with two points if we're not getting them the right way. "We have to be doing things now that will set us up for the end of the season. "I just don't think we're playing real good footy at the moment." King believes the team have shown good signs in training but is frustrated that has still not been transferred into matches. "We're two months into the season now and we shouldn't be playing the way we're playing," he said. "A lot of things we've been doing in training, we're just not doing in games. "Obviously the steel we showed was the big positive to come out of Monday. "We were down to 15 men but even though we lost Briersy and Stuart Reardon - two of our playmakers - we still didn't play real smart. That was the really disappointing thing. "We're a smart footy team with great players but sometimes we just play some dumb footy."Warrington Guardian

24th March.Castleford 31 Warrington 34 Louis Anderson's first try of the season secured victory for Warrington against a battling Castleford outfit. It was cruel luck on Cas for whom young star Joe Westerman scored a hat-trick of tries and kicked five goals. On 77 minutes Brent Sherwin kicked over a drop goal to put the home side 31-30 ahead. But Martin Gleeson set up Anderson in the dying seconds and the New Zealand international crashed over to clinch the win.Paul Cullen "We have had that sort of thing done to us so many times in the past, but there is a fair bit of football in our players and I was delighted with the way they held their nerve and came back. "In the first 20 minutes we were in absolute contro,l but Castleford then made life difficult for us and their half-backs were very creative. "We dealt with adversity very well today. We lost three players injured in the space of 60 seconds and it needs a fair bit of reorganising to keep your shape and structure."

23rd March. Wire are currently in second spot in the Super League table, and Paul Cullen took the opportunity to warn his SL rivals that they aint seen nothing yet. Never one to blow his teams trumpet too early Cull is showing confidence in his squad that has never been seen before. He said to the Warrington Guardian :"Michael has never been 100 per cent since he picked up that dead leg from Iafeta Paleaaesina in the Lee Briers Testimonial against Wigan. "We were away in Lanzarote and then he came back and picked up an injury to the same spot against Salford in pre-season. "He limped his way through the pre-season and has never really been 100 per cent, so I don't really think we've seen the best of him, which is a fair indication that you've not seen the best of us yet. advertisement "That's the pleasing aspect - there's a fair bit of improvement in us."

Steady as she goes at Cas says Cull, "I would think the game will be something not too dissimilar to Friday. "We don't really need to go and try to over-expand and overplay. "We'll need that at some point but maybe the conditions aren't right for us at this moment in time, field-wise and weather-wise as we found out last week to our cost at Bradford. "We've got to be prepared to complete sets, just keep knocking the sets off and play the game at the right end of the field." Warrington Guardian

22nd March.Wire could be unchanged for the Cas game as Monaghan still struggles with an injury.Speaking after the Huddersfield match, Cullen said: "We have no injuries at all. "All 12 substitutions were used, all players rotated and as we speak post-game everyone is reporting fit now for Castleford. "We erred on the side of caution with Michael Monaghan. We got as much out of him last week as we could have done, although unfortunately it wasn't enough for us on the day. "There's no guarantee we'll play him on Monday at Castleford."

21st March.Warrington: (12) 30 Huddersfield: (8) 14 . Chris Hicks maintained his record of scoring in every game this season as he helped his side to a hard-fought victory. Hicks scored his ninth and 10th tries of the season to become the first player in the club's history to score in each of the first seven fixtures. Hicks was inspirational throughout, and showed he is more than just a tryscorer by helping to create second-half scores for Lee Briers and centre Martin Gleeson. The victory sees Wire climb to second in the Super League table. Paul Cullen: "The game was always going to be a bit of a grind at some point and it was about how we handled it. "The pleasing part was when we dug a bit of a hole for ourselves by not completing sets and pushing the pass we corrected it and had the ability to open up and score some tries." On Hicks, Cullen added: "At the moment he's doing everything we are asking of him and more considering he hurt his ankle quite badly in the NRL semi-final play-offs. "But he's playing very, very well and I think there is more to come from him."

Scorers Warrington: Tries: Briers, Hicks 2, Gleeson, Bracek Goals: Briers 5. Huddersfield Tries: Gorrell, Pelo, Carlaw, Mounis Goals: Cudjoe 2, Hemingway

19th March. Mark Gleeson could make it 100 up against Huddersfield on Friday Warren Stevens is nearest on 75, however Mark will reach 100 games as a substitute if he comes on the field.Cullen said: "Mark's role off the bench is very important. He's a smart player and he's quick around the ruck. "He's not had that much game time in the early part of this year because of the form of the front row. We only made one substitution in the first half against Wigan and it worked well. We got a massive boost when those lighter players came off the bench. "That didn't work against Bradford because someone kept putting the ball on the floor. "Bradford always had the ball and you know full well if you put a lighter player on like Mark Gleeson and you take Jon Clarke off, they simply switch their attack right over the smaller player in the middle of the field. "You'd like to get him on when you've got good flow, good momentum and good field position." Winter weather is due over Easter and Cullen has told his players not to overdo things in attack, saying: "Although it's great to have that expansion and quality at times, when it didn't work at Bradford we kept trying it. Individual players - whether they were in the left, middle or right channels - kept pushing the pass. "We've got to have the ability to expand and move defences around, but if it doesn't work we've got to be patient for a couple of sets because I thought defensively we were outstanding at Bradford." Meanwhile Chris Hicks could become the first player in Wire history to score in all of the first seven games of a season,

18th March. On the Bradford game Cullen said: "I wouldn't know whether there's a single player in Super League that is 100 per cent even at this early stage. "I think that's pretty obvious from all 34 players that went on the field today but that's life, we deal with it." An obviously unhappy Cullen, reflecting on an error-riddled display from his side, added: "Under such circumstances, the better thing to do is to make sure you've got the ball and you've got field position and we didn't do that. "In the first 20 minutes, I think we put the ball down four times on their try line on second and third tackles. advertisement "If those plays were converted, we'd have had a grip of the game. "Unfortunately, they weren't and then we were taken back down to the other end of the field. "Bradford were better than us at that on this occasion. They knocked off the sets and they spent the game at the right end of the field for them. "We paid the price for pushing the pass. "I was disappointed with our patience. "We were probably a little bit guilty of trying to win the game too early."

16th March. Bradford 23 Warrington 10. Paul Deacon guided Bulls to their third win of the season as Warrington missed the chance to join Leeds at the top. Chris Hicks's try for Warrington set up a tense finish, but Ben Jeffries sealed the win with a 70-metre run after intercepting Matt King's wayward pass.

Warrington coach Paul Cullen: "We've paid the price for pushing the pass. "We were probably guilty of trying to win the game a little bit too early. "They beat us in the battle for field position, and that was always going to be the key factor in these conditions." "Michael Monaghan was taken off as precaution for what's to come."

15thMarch. Paul Cullen believes his side is improving with each week. He said: "I think there are some really good signs. "I think our good periods are getting longer and our vulnerable periods are getting shorter in matches. "I think the way the pack has stuck together has been a big factor. "The combination of Lee Briers and Michael Monaghan is another factor. advertisement "And the faith and trust in the quality and pace we've got out wide is also another big factor. "Underlining all of that, the team is healthy. "On the back of being healthy, it's fit. "On the back of being healthy and fit, it's confident and working well and working hard." Cullen said: " Other teams are now going through what we were put through for the vast majority of last year. It's not rocket science, it's very obvious. "Although, Saints may be bucking the trend at the moment. "The argument is is their performance now as good as it was this time last year because they've got so many injuries. "The quality of their squad means they are still digging in for those very late wins. How long they can keep that up with injury problems is another question altogether. "Other teams who have got injuries that don't have that many quality international players are in an awful state." Source Warrington Guardian. temporary link.

13th March. Chris Bridge will not play again this year,"Six months is a conservative estimate," said Cull. "That takes him to the back end of August. If you look at what happened with Karl Fitzpatrick, he played three games at the back end of Salford's season, didn't do himself any favours and got fiimself injured again. : "Chris may well need the fiill year and the full pre-season. "As we speak now, I've no intention of risking him for one game," "Chris may well want to play in the World Cup but that's not on our agenda at this moment in time," said Cullen. "He's got an awful lot of work to do to get that Achilles and ankle right."Cull considers Grix to take over from Bridge but a full week of traing is needed, he said: "Simon may take the mantle of Chris Bridge in one aspect, in that you've got to find a place for him somewhere. "Vinnie Anderson will still be the first-choice loose forward but Simon played really well at Hull KR.

Cull was pleased with the work his two halfs backs did against Wigan He added: "I was very pleased to see both Lee Briers and Michael Monaghan getting on the field and even more pleased to see them both get off it in one piece. "They've both been carrying knocks for a while. "Lee Briers was very touch-and-go going into that game and we had alternative field and goal kickers lined up. "As he got himself through the warm-up and the adrenalin started to kick in, he simply took it upon himself to take the goal kicks and thus take the responsibility for it. "But that's Lee Briers. He still leads from that front dominant position."

12th March.King could make Bradford game,Wolves head coach Paul Cullen said: "He's not trained as yet this week and not taken a head test as yet, so he is still suffering the effects of the injury. "It's always wise on these occasions to leave the concussion test until all symptoms have gone away. "That's not the case at the moment and we'll leave that as long as is needed to be honest."

11th March. Kevin Penny is still in Cullens thoughts afterr the player was dropped for the Wigan game.Matt King is not seriously hurt ,but was suffering from concussion after being stifff armed by Wigan's Richie Mathers.

Need to be at our best says Cull."Without a shadow of a doubt," he said. "We've shown glimpses of real quality and we've also shown glimpses of real vulnerability in defence. "We'll need to be at our creative best and also our toughest and meanest in defence. We've shown some signs of vulnerability in all our four games. "There is a continuance there of the work we have been doing all the way through pre-season and it's an area that will have to be improved across the 80 minutes. advertisement "And the key will be our continued improvement with our discipline. "Our penalty count at the weekend (Wolves conceded two penalties against the Catalans) was quite remarkable under the current circumstances and is a fair indication of how hard we have worked behind the scenes to make sure those technical aspects are working in our favour."Matt King returned to training this week and Cull says he should be available for the Wigan game

6th March. Former Warrington, Hull FC and Salford winger Richie Barnett has been banned from rugby league for two years after a breach of anti-doping regulations. Barnett provided a sample in April 2007 which was found to contain an elevated testosterone/epitestosterone ratio. The 26-year-old appeared before a Rugby Football League hearing on 15 February and his ban started on that date. Barnett was playing for Warrington at the time of the offence but was unattached at the time of the hearing. The two-year ban is in line with World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) guidelines. The sample which Barnett provided was supplied while he was still playing for Warrington in a match against Salford. Barnett subsequently left the Wolves for the City Reds, but was released by Salford at the end of last season. The former Great Britain Students winger enjoyed a fine scoring record in Super League - with 36 tries in 62 games. Barnett also had spells with Gateshead Thunder and Widnes in 2005. Source BBC
