30th August. Joe Price (1946-2006) Jackie Melling has led the tributes to Joe Price, the former Warrington forward who died last week aged 60 after an 18-month battle against cancer. Melling, who was a classy centre, and Price were Wilderspool team-mates in the late 1960s and became lifelong friends. "He was a hard man on the field," admitted Melling. "He saw the game as his job. His actual words to me were 'the opposition are taking money out of my pocket'. That's how he saw it. He was professional and a bit naughty with it. "He was a good trainer and absolutely out of this world for team spirit. He was the one who stoked everybody up. He was wonderful for team spirit. He was a singer and a dancer. I am so sad because he was so much of a character." Price made 128 appearances for Warrington, plus another 47 as a substitute, during a first-team career that lasted exactly 12 years. He was a product of Wigan junior rugby league and joined Warrington in 1965, after playing for Warrington Colts, and made his debut, aged 19, as a hooker against Halifax at Wilderspool that September. Warrington lost 16-10. These were dark days for the club but Price did collect a Lancashire Cup runners-up medal as a prop forward in 1967 when Warrington lost 13-10 to St Helens in a replayed final. Ken Kelly, the former Warrington captain, was one player who suffered at his hands. Kelly was still in his teens and playing for his hometown team St Helens when a late tackle from Price left him with a depressed fracture of the cheekbone during a league match at Wilderspool in October 1970. Kelly was carried off on a stretcher while Price was spoken to by referee Eric Clay but not sent off. The arrival of Alex Murphy as player-coach in May 1971 transformed Warrington's fortunes but they still knew how to look after themselves. Price, in fact, was sent off in the last game of the 1971-72 season, a play-off tie at Bradford, following an ugly clash with Stuart Gallacher, Northern's second-row forward, who had to be helped from the field. After the match there were more ugly scenes as supporters threw stones and both clubs were fined £100. Success followed too and Price collected the only winners' medal of his career when he came on as a substitute in the Captain Morgan Trophy final against Featherstone Rovers at the Willows in January 1974. Warrington won 4-0 on a cold, wet afternoon thanks to two penalty goals from Derek Whitehead. But Price was playing on borrowed time. Two weeks earlier he had been sent off three minutes from time for a high tackle on Graham Liptrott during the Player's No6 Trophy semi-final against St Helens at Wilderspool. His reputation preceded him into the disciplinary committee hearing and he was banned for 11 months - until December 31, 1974. On appeal, the ban was cut to four months, until May 31, but that still meant that he missed out on the three major finals that were to follow, the Player's No6 final against Rochdale Hornets, the Challenge Cup final against Featherstone and the Club Championship final against St Helens. Price served his time and bounced back to give Warrington more sterling service, a fact that was recognised by the supporters who contributed £3,000 to his testimonial fund in 1976. His career also enjoyed an Indian summer when he filled in at hooker in the 1976-77 season after Tony Miller emigrated to Australia and played in the Premiership final defeat to St Helens at Swinton's Station Road. His last first-team appearance came on September 18, 1977, aged 31, against Featherstone at Wilderspool, and ended with a 27-17 defeat. He had worn every jersey in the pack during his stint with the club and scored 13 tries. After his playing days were over he enjoyed a successful career as a publican. He is survived by his second wife, Julie, (his late first wife was also called Julie), two daughters and grandchildren. His funeral is at St Edward's Roman Catholic Church, Scot Lane, Wigan, near to the JJB Stadium, on Friday (September 1st) at 10.30am. Gary Slater.
I remember seeing Joe Play many times he was hard really hard.

24th August.Player of the Month Gary Chambers and Mike WainwrightWarrington Wolves Coaching Staff have selected Mike Wainwright as Player of the Month for July. The Player of the Month is sponsored by Prime Time Recruitment and the award itself is elected by the Wolves Coaching Staff of Paul Cullen, Paul Darbyshire, Mike Forshaw and Gary Chambers, together they looked at criteria including not only match performance, but also professional day to day attitude in training and around the club. The event is a great opportunity for local businesses to watch the players train, mingle with players and network with other companies. Mike is currently celebrating his testimonial season with the Club, he has blossomed in his second spell at Warrington into one of the most consistent forwards in Super League. A Warringtonian by birth, ‘Wedge’ has been a supporter of the club from a young age attending the famous Premiership Final victory over Halifax at Elland Road. Played for Woolston Rovers before joining Warrington’s Academy, he was a halfback as a junior and played stand-off in the 1993 Academy Cup Final victory, before switching to back row. Toured Australia with Great Britain Academy in 1994 but missed most of the opening season of Super League with a recurrent foot injury. Left Warrington at the end of the 1999 season to join Salford, his game developed at the Willows and he returned a more experienced and confident player in 2003, playing the best rugby of his career as the club moved to the Halliwell Jones Stadium. Mike has made 146+12 appearances for Warrington Wolves in Super League scoring 23 tries (219+15 appearances 32 tries including Salford City Reds, 2000-2002). Assistant Coach Gary Chambers who awarded Mike Wainwright with his prizes of a trophy and champagne revealed his decision behind his choice, "Durablity is his biggest aspect, his game time and work rate during matches does not go unnoticed by the players or the Coaching Staff, but occasionally by the fans. He is an outstanding player and very dedicated to improving himself game by game. He is a Club stalwart off the pitch as well. Mike is also enjoying a well deserved testimonial, which not many players achieve." Mike Wainwright commented on accepting his award, "I am delighted to be recognised by the coaching department, especially in current times, with our season being as up and down as it has been. We are looking to turn a corner this weekend and secure a play – off place."
Warrington Wolves have three players in the 20-man train-on squad to begin preparations for this autumn’s 2006 Federation Shield tournament. "The Federation Shield will provide the players with a competitive environment in which they can experience a higher grade of international Rugby League. "Their inclusion is recognition that not only are they important as far as England are concerned for the Federation Shield but also in respect of further international honours, including the 2008 World Cup." In addition to the 20-man train-on squad, England will be bolstered by the arrival of players from the present Great Britain training squad and a England squad for the Federation Shield tournament will be selected following the engage Super League Grand Final on Saturday, October 14.

U16 Unbeaten! The Wolves U16 Tourists have convincingly beaten Clovelly Crocodiles 72-0 in their last game to maintain an unbeaten record for their time in Australia.
14th August. Postcard from Oz. The U16's have had a great start to their tour of Australia by winning the first two of their three matches (last match on Wednesday), they beat Tweed Head Rep team 38-18 and then went on to beat NSW Country Rep team 12-10. Tour Coach Dave Elliott updates us on the tour so far: U16's Ready to go.
3rd - 5th August The tour party met up at the Halliwell Jones stadium for their first ever Australia tour. Our flights went out on time (flying with Emirates) all the boys where a bit excited and not many got any sleep before we landed in the hottest place on earth - Dubai! Money definitely talks in this country. After a few hassles with passports and tickets we continued our journey to Brisbane via Singapore. We landed in Brisbane on the 5th at 8am, ever tired and wanting some much needed sleep. As we got to the apartments we unpacked and went for a short training session on the beach (it's a hard life in Oz!) before all the players and staff crashed out for the night. Life on the ocean waves!
6th August We went on the first your excursion on the Sir Henry Morgan boat, this took us up the coast on a cruise to a private island, the players had a great time swimming in the sea, exploring the island looking for the local wildlife of wallabies and kangaroos. Some just took time out to relax and play on the beach. This was an excellent first full day on tour with the whole party having time to take stock and rest before a hectic next few days - a great day was had by all! Darren Burns meets up with the tourists
7th August We went to our training hosts - Burleigh Bears, they have let us use their facilities while we are on the Gold Coast, and the facilities at the club (equivalent to our NFP clubs in this country) are outstanding with everything you could wish for and putting some SL clubs to shame! First training session was good, all players are very enthusiastic and showed no sign of jet lag after the long flight. After training the tour party split in to 2 groups, one went shopping, the other went sea fishing with the crew from the Sir Henry Morgan, and both had a great time and got loads out of this day. Opening game versus South Tweed
8th August Game Day One First game of the tour and all the party are a little bit nervous and a bit unsure on how we will perform and the opposition that we will face. The game was played at South Tweed Rugby Club at Tweed Heads, we ended up playing a rep team (U18s) after we were told we would be playing a club team! Good team performance with us winning 38-18. Team versus South Tweed Rep: Chris Murphy, Yaad Johal, Simon Counsell, Taylor Welch, Nick Touhey, Alex Thompson, Liam Duffy, Mark Thomas, Chris Dean, Mark Smith, Danny Martin, Steven Taylor, Callum Casey Subs: Danny Brown, Alex Hurst, Brad Atherton, Will Stringer, Andy Webb Tries: Murphy, Johal, Welch, Touhey, Brown 2, Hurst Goals: Dean 3, Brown 2 MOM: Danny Brown, and Chris Murphy Injured players: Adam Neal & Josh Cullen
9th August After yesterdays match today was a "down" day for the players and we all went to Sea world, this was a great day even when we found out the water park was closed! Players/staff enjoyed the fun on the rides and watching the sharks and dolphins at play. Suncorp stadium , home of the Broncos.
10th August Game Day Two Our second match was based in New South Wales in what could be considered the "bush". Before we went to this game we had a morning with Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp stadium, their training venue and facilities are out of this world, a must see for all Rugby League coaches! We than went for a tour round their fantastic stadium (almost as good as the Halliwell-Jones!). The lads were looking forward to meeting some of the players however we couldn't have access, as their coach had put a media ban on them for the day. Great! We had a good time nontheless but it would have been nice to for the lads to meet some of their heroes. We then traveled to the game and once again found ourselves playing a rep team. Only this time a quality rep team from New South Wales country! The Wolves team was magnificent, this was an outstanding team display, one that the Warrington club should be proud of. We eventually ran out victors 12-10, a proud achievement. Team versus NSW Country Representative Team: Chris Murphy, Yaad Johal, Danny Martin, Andy Webb, Nick Touhey, Alex Thompson, Alex Hurst, Will Stringer, Liam Duffy, Brad Atherton, Steven Taylor, Mark Smith, Callum Casey, Danny Brown, Chris Dean, Mark Thomas, Adam Neal, Josh Cullen, Taylor Welch Tries: Thompson 2 Goals: Brown 2 MOM: Danny Brown and Alex Hurst Injured player: Simon Counsell . wolfmail
. I believe the players that jumped into the water off the boat jumbed back even quicker when they realised the sea was inhabited by Bull Sharks , not quite Southport lads hey!The bull shark has a short snout that is wider than it is long (hence its name). Its belly is off-white, its top surface is gray, and the eyes are small. The first dorsal fin is much longer and more pointed than the second dorsal fin. A pup's fins have black tips, but these marking fade in the adults. The females are larger than the males. The bull shark is also know as the cub, Ganges, Nicaragua, river, Swan River Whaler, Zambezi, shovelnose, slipway grey, square-nose, and Van Rooyen's shark. Picture
Warrington have announced that they are looking at plans to increase the capacity of the Halliwell Jones Stadium, the present capacity is just over 13,000, and the club are looking to increase it to 18,000 or 20,000 by filling in the corners as it were. The club believe 18,000 is attainable and that it would be possible to fill the ground regularly.

5th August. Bradford 50-22 Warrington. Wires display in the first half was poor it improved in the second half but by then it was too late to make an impact althoughChris Bridge replied with a try either side of half-time for Warrington but even when Toa Kohe-Love went over for the Wolves, the Bulls were comfortable. Two late tries by Terry Newton put the seal on a convincing Bradford victory. Said coach Paul Cullen: "We've paid the price for a very poor start to the game. I thought our second-half effort was very special but the ball that we squandered early on has cost us very dearly. "The way to beat Bradford - and we've had a very proud record against the Bulls lately - is to keep the ball and turn them around. "We did that in the second half but the gulf was too great on the back of the ball that we squandered."

.4th August. Wonderful Visit to Oz! A 20 strong squad of Wolves U16's players has jetted out for 2 weeks to Australia on Thursday for a Rugby tour that will both educate and test the youngesters physically and mentally. The brainchild of Academy coaches Gary Chambers and Dave Elliot, the trip for the selected squad will see them play a number of matches against hand picked opposition over the weeks, and attend coaching clinics and meetings with the likes of Nathan Wood, Allan Langer, Andrew Johns and Adrian Morley. It won't be all work and no play for the team as the itinerary allows for trips to interesting local places in Sydney and Brisbane as they move around for their fixtures. On hand to see them off this afternoon was Chief Executive Andy Gatcliffe, Chairman Doug Hoyle and Head Coach Paul Cullen, all proffering words of advise to the travellers and thanks to the supporters and families who helped to raise the money for the trip. Dave Elliot thanked the families of the boys on the trip in particular, along with main sponsors the Vice Presidents Association for raising many thousands of pounds and SquadBuilder who have helped throughout the year with sponsorship and fundraising activities. Paul Cullen made it clear that the trip would be a great opportunity for the players to expand their horizons and improve their game. Coaches would be keeping a close eye on the development of the players and he made it clear what would be expected of them, "Try your best 24/7, you're representing the club and yourselves on the trip and we will be looking for the players to come back and show that they are what we want in the Academy and ultimately the Wolves first team. I'm looking for high yield, low maintenance professionals to progress through the club."
