28th September. Wigan 25 Warrington 12. Rugby league need a strong, competitive Warrington and I'm proud that we have produced one this year, said Wolves coach Paul Cullen, we also made a mockery of the £ 750,000 difference in the budgets that both clubs work with.Warrington rocked their hosts with robust defending and produced some clinical finishing to raise their hopes of a first away win over Wigan for 10 years. They went in front with an 11th-minute penalty from free-scoring stand-off Graham Appo after Wigan prop Quentin Pongia was sin-binned for delaying the play-the-ball.had already counter-attacked from one risky long pass by Wigan scrum-half Adrian Lam and did so a second time to send Burns through a yawning gap for the game's first try.Lam made amends with a try of his own when he raced on to a precision grubber kick from hooker Terry Newton on 26 minutes, and captain Andrew Farrell's conversion cut the gap to just two points. However, Farrell, whose left leg was heavily strapped from the start, went off after 35 minutes and Wigan suffered another blow just moments later when centre Paul Johnson was sin-binned for obstruction. Warrington again punished Wigan's indiscipline as captain Nat Wood collected a kick from Lam and raced 80 metres for a glorious solo try, this time unconverted by Appo, to give the underdogs a 12-6 half-time lead. Rugby league need a strong, competitive Warrington and I'm proud that we have produced one this year Wolves coach Paul Cullen But Wigan regrouped at the break and were back on terms within six minutes of the re-start, second rower Danny Tickle forcing his way over from acting half-back after prop Craig Smith had been held just short of the line. With Farrell still off the field, Tickle converted his own try to level the scores and give the Warriors a platform from which to win the game in the closing stages. Kris Radlinski sent in winger Brett Dallas and Smith finally forced his way over for a deserved try that eased Wigan through to the elimination semi-final. Wigan 25 Tries: Lam, Tickle, Dallas, Smith Goals: Farrell, Tickle 2, Robinson . Warrington 12 Tries: Burns, Wood Goals: Appo 2 .HT 6-12 Attn 14,000

Academy Champions! The Wolves Under 18 Academy picked up the silerware this evening by beating the Huddersfield Giants in their Grand Final. The Wolves ran out 32-20 winners in a tense, tight game. With the Wolves leading well at half-time the Giants hit back and came within 2 points of the victors before the home side pulled away. Wakefield Programmes The Wolves have had an extra run of the last programme delivered to the club shop Wolfware, as the programmes had all sold out by 2.00pm on matchday. Get your last Tetley's programme for £2.00.
As expected Sid Domic will be leaving the club, a surprise perhaps is that he is going to Wakefield, Domic is leaving due to Wire reaching the limit on overseas players, Cullen said that it was annoying that some clubs ie London are allowed up to 11 players on the overseas register whilst other clubs have to lose players they would like to keep, this is in no way criticism of such as London as he is an expansionist and has great admiration atwhat Tony Rea is doing, I just wish for a level playing field.
25th September.Lee Briers has been added to the squad for the game with Wigan on Saturday along with Ian Sibbet however it is not as yet made clear as to whether Briers will play as there must be some doubt over his match fitness, and with Graham Appo filling it so well would it be wise to rock a steady ship.Cullen said: "I think we go into the game hardened and sharpened by the fact that we've been in knockout Rugby League mode for the past three weeks while fighting for our play-offs lives. "Wigan's place in the play-offs was already secured and so we go into the game more in tune with knockout football than they do. "However, we're going into this match expecting Wigan to be at 100 per cent full strength. They rested a number of players last week and we're expecting them all to be back. "I've no fear of trying to get our players up for this one because they haven't come down since the Wakefield game. We're going into it in very good spirits. The Wolves' head coach is giving nothing away but said: "Graham has been one of our leading players since Lee's broken wrist. And for us to play like we have with a winger at stand off, he's been a revelation. If he's not the Man of Steel this year then I've never seen one. "It has been a remarkable season for us, so far, in more ways than one. We lost our main play-maker in Lee early in the piece and at the time we were in sixth place in the table. I was quoted at the time of saying 'We are duty bound to be in that position on his return.' Well, hopefully he'll return against Wigan and we're in that position. Mission accomplished."
Wire fans last night crowned Graham Appo their player of the year at a Wilderspool presentation night packed with supporters wishing their team well for the clash with Wigan in the play-offs. Lee Briers has been called into the Wales squad for the Internationals and to face Australia, he was named as captain by coach Neil Kelly, Lee who was man of the match in Wales' 46-22 defeat by the world champions three years ago, has not played since July because of a broken wrist, who can forget his stream of drop goals keeping the ball away from a rattled Aussie team for long periods of the game.Lee is expected to return for the Wolves in the Super League play-offsThe Wire stand-off, who was man of the match in Wales' 46-22 defeat by the world champions three years ago, has not played since July because of a broken wrist. and will win his 11th cap for Wales in the opening match of the new six-team European Nations Cup against Russia at Aberavon on October 26. "Lee is a very skilled rugby player, as he showed against Australia in the World Cup, and he has worked hard in training to maintain his fitness while his wrist injury healed," said Wales coach Neil Kelly. "He has also proved himself an inspirational leader and he has my confidence as captain of the side."

21st September. Warrington 52-Wakefield Trinity 12. It was the 22nd September last year that Warrington 's season ended with a 50 pts to 10 thrashing at the hands of Wakefield Trinity, any thoughts Wakey had of doing the same to Warrington 12 mnths later quickly evaporated as Wire went 12 - 0 up after 15 minutes with a quick try from Sid Domic and then graham Appo got in on the act, a S.L.record crowd of 9,261 saw Appo score 32 pts including another hat-trick of tries and 10 goals, Domic got the last try of the afternoon ,with Ben Westwood getting two and Paul Noone joining in the rout with one try. Cullens Comment. Emotions ran high last weekend, but it will be nothing compared to this weekend with the final Super League game and a chance to bag a play-off place for first time. LAST WEEKEND'S GAME WAS A VERY PHYSICAL ENCOUNTER AGAINST HUDDERSFIELD. DID YOU EXPECT IT TO BE? No not more than any game that we have played this season, I would like to think that Wilderspool is just a tough a place to play as the McAlpine. All teams want to make there own ground a fortress and the Giants are no different than anyone else. THIS WEEKEND WE TAKE ON WAKEFIELD IN OUR FINAL TETLEY'S SUPER LEAGUE GAME AT WILDERSPOOL, BEFORE WE DISCUSS THE EMOTIONS BEHIND THAT GAME, LET'S FOCUS ON THE GAME. WE PLAYED WAKEFIELD IN THE LAST GAME OF THE YEAR LAST YEAR AT BELLE VUE AND THEY BEAT US. IS THIS A GRUDGE MATCH? It is fair to say we are aware of the threat that the Wildcats pose and the memory of the final game of last year and our performance at Wakefield this year still linger. The only grudges we have are with ourselves, Warrington players lost their jobs after the final game of last year, because of the way they performed against a side that was desperate to win and we weren't, this a match we are absolutely desperate to win. 12th September.Huddersfield 12 Warrington 25. This was certainly no game for the faint hearted, the mayhem started within minutes when Mark Hilton Kaylied a Huddersfield player, Warrington backed off from the rough stuff after Hilton was put on report but Huddersfield wished to carry it on. They paid the price with a 12-4 penalty count against them at one stage plus 4 players in the sin bin, Wire had two in the bin for retaliation. In between all this some tries were scored Paul Wood and Cayliss for Warrington, Jamie Bloeme and O'Doherty for Huddersfield. Tries Warrington: Cardiss, P.Wood, Goals Appo 7, Cardiss 1, Drop goal N.Wood. Tries Huddersfield: O'Doherty Bloem Goals McNamara 2. HT 6-16 attn 4,443.

Wolves' new stadium should be named in the next few weeks and it seems certain to be a local business. Club chief executive Andy Gatcliffe confirmed this week that two companies were still in the running to sign up to a £750,000 package to sponsor the stadium. More than 100 businesses have been sent packages about the deal and Mr Gatcliffe says that he has been up and down the country talking to potential investors. But now with the opening of the stadium less than six months away, he says that the field is down to two and the name will be released in the near future. "We are delighted. It has been a considerable effort but we are now in the final stages of the discussions," he said.
New Wire prop forward signing Chris Leikvoll joins Warrington Wolves after an end to his season in Australia. The 28-year-old's stint with St. George Illawarra ended after a victory at Brisbane Broncos at the weekend as St George failed to make the play-offs. But a fit Leikvoll, who came out on top against some of the best forwards in the business at Lang Park, told Wolves head coach Paul Cullen this week that he can not wait to join his new teammates. Leikvoll has been signed on a two-year contract starting in 2004. Cullen said: "He's come through the end of the season fully fit, has no injuries and will have a couple of weeks break before going into his pre-season work with Sydney St. George. He'll then be over on the same plane as our other overseas stars after Christmas. "But check out the quality of the opposition he was up against in the match with Brisbane. It was a much weakened St. George side up against a virtually full strength Brisbane team at Lang Park and he went up against the likes of Shane Webke, Petero Civoniceva, Gorden Tallis, Corey Parker and Andrew Gee. "They are some of the biggest and toughest men in the world of Rugby League and Chris has led the go-forward against them. He started the game, playing a very important role, and finished it. "So he's finished the season in great form and in great health and that's a big story for us this week."
Wolves hope to end Huddersfield Giant's interest in the play-offs at McAlpine Stadium tomorrow, Friday, and hopefully keep their own top six hopes alive. Wigan, Leeds, Hull and St. Helens are among the clubs to have lost at Huddersfield this season and they have only lost one of their last five games. But seventh-placed Wolves are boosted in their aim of a third defeat of the Giants this year by having a fully fit squad of forwards available.Nick Fozzard and Jerome Guisset have recovered from calf and wrist injuries respectively and head coach Paul Cullen has added them to the squad which defeated Halifax on Sunday. Centre lan Sibbit is also available and could play with protection over his broken thumb. Stand off and skipper Lee Briers is back in full training and progressing well but is not expected to figure in the televised game 8pm ko. Any two of six clubs can still finish in fifth and sixth places this season and for Warrington to give themselves the greatest they .need to win both of their remaining Super League games, and that London lose one of theirs or Hull do not win again. Head coach Paul Cullen said: "The season turns on this game. We accept the pressure that comes with that and look forward to it because we have earned the right to be in this position. "Huddersfield is not an easy place to win at, as we found out in the first game of the season. I honestly didn't feel at that time we were given full credit for the quality of rugby we played in that match or the importance of the win. "But the McAlpine Stadium has proved to be the graveyard for clubs far more senior and settled than ours. "We fully respect how physically tough it is going to be and how skilful and well-coached this Huddersfield side are. "But the physical aspect will not be our greatest concern it's the quality of football that they can pay and the fact that they have found a fighting spirit which is getting them away from the bottom end of the table. "It is a massive match and one we are desperately looking forward to." Quota Wolves are exploring the opportunities surrounding Pacific islands players possibly not counting on the overseas quota next year. Cullen confirmed that preparation for next season in terms of player contracts has been going well. He insisted: "The vast majority of my work for next year is done but we will not be discussing it before this season is finished. That is to respect the work that is still to be done and the fact that people have paid good money for us to finish the season focused."
Full back Penny, Wires longest serving player, is out of contract at the end of the season and after a year hit with injury there are only two remaining games to prove to head coach Paul Cullen that he merits a new one. Penny, who crossed for his 100th try against Halifax on Sunday, said: "It's always nice to score a try and to get my 100th means a lot to me but it means a lot more to get my position back and hopefully to keep it against Huddersfield on Friday. "This year has been difficult. I didn't have a good pre-season last year as I kept pulling up with my ankle injury and it has told on me through the year. Hopefully, I can get a good pre-season for next year, that's if I can get myself a contract which is what I am playing for now. "I don't want to go anywhere else. There are rumours that I've signed for another club but I haven't. My heart's with Warrington and I want to stop here."
9th September. Wires revival under Paul Cullen has resulted in the highest crowd figures at Wilderspool in the Super League era, the last Super League game ever at Wilderspool vs Wakefield is a 9,300 sell out, which takes the average crowd to 7,000 for the season, the first time since 1954 that the club has not had a gate below 5,000, 89,173 fans have attended games so far this season.

7th September.Warrington 40 Halifax 18. I'm afraid it was the old old story as Warrington obviously went into this game thinking that it was a foregone conclusion that they would win, for a team with aspirations of a top six place you would think it would dawn on so called professional rugby players that in rugby league you take nothing for granted. It was a dream start for Warrington with Darren Burns powering over almost from the whistle, this probably added to the players misguided confidence as Halifax fought back to lead at half time 16-18. One could say that the sinbinning of Halifax's Jaymes Chapman turned the game with Warrington running in 3 tries in 7 minutes to take the win, Paul Cullen was none too impressed by the performance commenting, "We haven't shortchanged the Warrington public many times this season but we have today,"" I don't think the players need a verbal bashing from me, they are a pretty sorrowful bunch, we allowed ourselves to become the victims of the slowest game I have ever witnessed. If you are looking for positives you will have a long search." Warrington Tries: Penny, Westwood 2, Burns 2, Gaskell, Gleeson, Goals Appo 5. Halifax Tries: R. Sheriffe 2, Finnerty, Goals Finn 3. 4th September. Halifax must be dreading the appearance of Graham Appo at standoff on Sunday, Appo replaced the injured Lee Briers in July in the home game with Halifax and ended the game with a club record 34 points with included four tries and nine goals. Graham's form has kept going since and his last outing against Leeds on Friday last the Wire faithful were treated to a spectacular chip kick touchdown which Wire coach Paul Cullen said "Was the nearest thing to Phil Blake I have seen since Phil Blake." Any thoughts of complacency should stay on the back burner as players who wish to stay at the club will be playing for next years contracts, players on the fringe will only have two or three games with which to impress Cullen. Many outside the club thought the injury to Briers was the deathnel of any hopes Warrrington had of reaching the playoffs but Appo has stepped into the role admirably. Cullen Said " I couldn't foresee how well he would go when he was moved to standoff, during the year he has kept reminding me that he has played a little bit at standoff in the past and i never took him on till Lee's injury." Ian Sibbet, Jerome Guisset and Nick Fozzard could all be missing this weekend due to injury, further news will of course be here when available.
Warrington will be welcoming back two players from the not to distant past on Sunday, namely ex Great Britain and Warrington players Allan Bateman and Kevin Ellis, the pair are expected to figure in the Bridgend Blue Bulls that meet Carlisle Centurians in the curtain raiser KO 12:45 pm to the Wolves game with Halifax KO 3 pm, Kevin is player/coach of the Welsh side in it's first year, the third game of the afternoon will involve Torfaen Tigers and Bolton le Moors in the Conference Shield Final KO 5:15 pm.
A panel of experts has been put together for a state of the game forum due to take place at the Touchdown Club on September 18th, Richard Lewis and David Waite will be joined by Wolves coach Paul Cullen and Warrington's senior referree Karl Kirkpatrick, the event was organised by Squadbuilder , doors open 7.30 pm for an 8 pm start there will be an entrance fee for non- members. There will be raffle and an auction during the evening.
It would be a mistake to think that Wilderspool will be shut down after the the visits of Halifax and Wakefield this year plus hopefully any playoff games, the last game scheduled is the clash between Warrington and New Zealand A on October 26th, there is the none to small matter of the European Nations Cup Final on the 16th November, the finalist will be from the group winners Group one will consist of England A with theWires Paul Wood and John Sibbet involved plus Russia and Wales Group 2 will have France Ireland and Scotland, any players in the Great Britain squad for the Ashes will not be involved.
