30th March.Wire started brightly but too many errors in the second half meant they failed to get on the scoreboard in the second half as Hull eased to victory at Wilderspool. Steve Prescott made the difference, bagging a try and five goals in Hull's third League win of the season. Jon Clarke scored the first try but Hull struck back with quick scores by Colin Best and Ritchie Barnett. Richard Fletcher was sin-binned but ToaKohe-Love scored against his old side and Jason Smith's drop sealed the win. Paul Cullen refused to blame the loss of Lee Briers for the defeat , Briers missed the game with a shoulder injury but Wolves boss Cullen said: "I'm not going to play the victim. We had 17 players out there capable of beating Hull but they didn't do that." He added: "The one thing that disappointed me was our execution, particularly down the left-hand side." Warrington 14, Tries: Clarke 1, Goals Appo 5 . Hull 27. Tries: Best, Barnett, Kohe-Love, Prescott .Goals Prescott 5.Drops:Smith 1. 27th March. The 600 or so fans had to be asked to leave Griffin Park on Saturday such was their joy at the win, it was an after match party with a differennce as the fans carried on celebrating 20 minutes after the game had ended, only an annoucement on the ground tannoy asking them to leave stopped the jubilations.Paul Cullen said that the victory was a major achievement and he praised the team for their defensive qualities and and attitude,He Said " we worked hard for the win,the call all week was for patience and we played very smartly. Lee Briers control of our kick execution was outstanding and we broke them down, I rate London highly as they are very thorough and professional and know how to control a game with completion rates and kick and chase." We attempted to do to them what they did to a very good Hull side a fortnight earlier and to do that on their turf ia a major achievement,if I'm delighted with any one thing from any other in the game it was our defence, men who are renowned for their attacking play such as Lee Briers ,Nathan Wood and Graham Appo defended magnificently,The performance shows we've got guys who want to play for this club and want to win games".Cullen is expected to field an unchanged team for the visit of Hull on Sunday to Wilderspool KO 3pm. The Wires last game at Wilderspool this season will be against New Zealand A as part of the Kiwis tour which starts after the currant Super League season,The Wire are not at the moment expected to start using the new stadium until the first round of Super League 1X so if drawn at home in the first round of the Powergen Cup could still play at Wilderspool early next year, but reports suggest that the new stadium which is rocketing up could be ready this November or December,The Rugby Football League have confirmed that there is no plan to move the Challenge Cup from it's preseason slot next year.No date has yet been confirmed for the Kiwi game. A Wire Under 21 player Gareth Brown is in the Great Britain train on squad for the Great Britain Students tour of Australia in June and July this summer, Gareth a second row forward is studying for a sports science degree at Warrington's Chester College Padgate Campus he has 7 England caps and 3 GB caps. Lee Briers was fined £600 with £55 costs on Wednesday for drinking and driving he was also banned from driving for 18 Months after pleading guilty Gary Heaven defending said" He travelled down to London on the Friday and when he travelled back on the Saturday he had a couple of pints ,he made an error of judgement and it's an embarrassment to him".Lee has agreed to complete an alcohol rehabilitation course which if completed will reduce his ban by 4 months, Come on two pints and they think he needs rehabilitating .I'd best keep my head down then or they'll give me a lobotomy. The Wolves have been given a boost with the news that Warrington Borough Council will not be pressing the club for repayment of a £240,000 loan, the club was loaned the money in 1999 when the club was in financial trouble as well as having an accountant defraud the club to the tune of £250,000.Since new management took over the club has made great strides to improve its financial situation, Andy Gatcliffe CE of the Wolves said he was encouraged by the news, the council have also learned that Wilderspool the current home of the club is now worth between £1.6 and £ 2 million, it was bought from the club for £1.1 million. 25th March.Reports are emerging that Lee Briers has fail a breath test on Sunday morning in Liverpool Rd Warrington, the player was dropped off after the London game and was stopped whilst driving his BMW sports car, he was taken to Warrington Police Station where a test proved positive the police confirmed that a 24 year old male from Rainhill has been charged and will appear in court.,when asked to comment Paul Cullen said this is an internal matter and I have no comment. 22nd March.London Broncos 8 Warrington Wolves 29.A master class from Lee Briers led The Wire to their first win over London for two years at Griffin Park. The stand-off was instrumental in threeof their five tries, setting up Sid Domic (19) and Brent Grose (26) to put the Wolves 14-2 ahead. Andrew King replied for London, but Ben Westwood (55) put the result beyond doubt before Ian Sibbit ` from Briers' kick ` and Graham Appo rounded it off. Cullen said: "I asked the guys to do what London did at Hull and they have done that. We were very patient and very controlled. I'm delighted." London :Tries: King Goals: Martin (2) Drops:0. Warrington : Domic Grose Westwood Sibbit Appo Briers (4) Drops Briers 1. Att: 3,105 H/T: 8-14 20th March.Nick Fozzard will turn out for the Wire against London on Saturday after completing his one match ban courtesy of an Under 21 game played on Wednesday night. Coach Paul Cullen is reported to have told Fozzard to make his behaviour on the exemplary as others may try to wind him up. Cullen said It is a bonus to have Nick in the side for the London game, he makes inroads with the ball and he is an impact player, he was travelling well before he left the field against Leeds. Nick is very aware of the adverse publicity that followed his dismissal and we are very wary that we now dont become a victim of that. His behaviour has to be exemplary because seeds of doubt have been sewn in peoples minds. We have to be wary that from any more contentious tackles Nick is not on his way off the field. We need thirteen players on the field for 80 minutes. We cannot play the victim and I refuse to play the referee card every time things go wrong for us. Cullen is expected to field the same team that faced Leeds; it is the Wires first time at Griffin Park the ground that London Broncos share with Brentford Football Club. Back in training this week are Rob Smythe, Warren Stevens and Lee Penny, they are not however ready to face London and are expected to return against Hull on the 30th March at Wilderspool. The team to face London is as follows: Graham Appo, Brent Grose, Ian Sibbet, Ben Westwood, Dean Gaskell, Lee Briers, Nathan Wood, Nick Fozzard, Jon Clarke, Mark Hilton, Darren Burns, Mike Wainwright, Sid Domic. Substitutes, Mark Gleeson, Paul Wood, Jerome Guisset and Paul Noone. Eighteenth man, Matt Sturm or Kevin Crouthers. The game throws up a number of interesting side issues Sid Domic, Jon Clarke and Rob Smythe have had spells at the Broncos plus Rod Purdham, Rob Jackson and Mark Cox were at Whitehaven Warriors whilst Paul Cullen was coach. Warrington won the last encounter between the two sides in February 26-16 Brent Grose scoring 3 tries on his debut, both sides have improved since then and the game will not be any kind of bench mark for the encounter on Saturday. The game is due to kick off at 6.05pm and is live on Sky sports. Teams from Scotland and Wales will join local sides for the annual Fleadh Rugby League tournament at Crosfields Hood Lane ground on the 29th March. The event for under 11s is to promote Irish culture in the town after the town centre bombing which killed Tim Parry and Jonathan Ball 10 years ago this week. The event starts at noon and a trophy will be awarded for fair play. 13th March. Warrington have concerns about a recent article in a rugby league newspaper, the suggestion is inferred that Nick Fozzard was targeted by Leeds as a player who is likely to blow up if antagonised, and that the player was targeted in that respect, Paul Cullen said If the inferences are true and the Fozzard scenario was a deliberate premeditated plot hatched by Leeds back room staff to single him out for special treatment to invoke retaliation and then risk dismissal, then someone somewhere is playing a dangerous game not only with the careers of professional players but the health and safety of his own players." The Warrington Guardian Newspaper has asked the Rugby Football League to comment on the article and to raise any concerns it had, a spokesman said, Any specific breach of the rules at a game will always be dealt with by the appropriate disciplinary committee. Leeds Rhinos coach Darrell Powell said We didnt target Fozzard in a discipline way at all and we havent spoken to that newspaper about Nick Fozzard. The new Warrington stadium is becoming a tourist attraction, it is reported that families have been seen sat around the stadium watching the build complete with flasks and lunch boxes, what next hot dog vendors and ice cream sellers vying for the best spot. Fans are being advised to take up a new season ticket offer guaranteeing entrance to this seasons super league games, with the capacity only 9,600 and with problems getting in the ground on time experienced at the Leeds game, a ticket will guarantee you not getting locked out for the likes of Wigan and Saints. Prices are £123 and £190 for the Brian Bevan stand.
11th March.Nick Fozzard was today handed a £400 fine and a one match suspension for his indiscretions in the game v Leeds Sunday Last.he was however found not guilty of headbutting Barry McDermott the offence for which he was sent from the field ,and cost Wire the game,Ganson again shows why he should not be refereeing the top flight of the game. 10th March.Paul Cullen was pleased with the way his team battled after Nick Fozzard was dismissed,he added "We were not smart enough of and gifted them the game but it is testament to our character that we came back when down to twelve men". Further to the matter of Fozzards dismissal It seems that he was targeted by the Leeds new psychologist as a man likely to react to provocation. Darren Robinson is a self styled new breed of Sports Psychologist who points out weaknesses in a teams makeup, this it seems was passed on to the team to instigate a confrontation with Fozzard knowing his reaction, although I would add probably anyone in rugby league could have told Leeds that for free.Personally I find the whole area distasteful and not in the spirit of the game. 9th March.Warrington 22 Leeds 32. Here was a game Warrington could have won however the loss of Nick Fozzard early on proved decisive ,yet another referreeing decision that was crucial in the defeat by Leeds ,Warrington Started brightly with a goal by Lee Briers and a try by Sid Domic which Briers failed to improve,on 18 minutes Mark Calderwood went in for Leeds this was converted by David Furner another goal by Furner pushed Leeds further ahead,on 24 minutes Gary Connolly scored a try Furner improved ,then Lee Briers kicked a penalty for Wire.Matt Adamson scored a further try for Leeds Furner missed the goal, the turning point in the game came with the dismissal of Fozzard after an altercation with Barry McDermott.Just after the break Grahoam Appo went in this was followed by the conversion by Briers plus a penalty kick, 59 minutes Senior broke away to score for Leeds,Furner added the two, another two minutes past before Chev Walker scored for Leeds Furner missed the kick.On 66 minutes Appo scored a try for Wire converted by Briers,The scoring was complete when Chev walker scored another try for Leeds.Warrington Tries: Domic 1, Appo 2, Goals ;Lee Briers 5 .Leeds Tries:Walker 2, Calderwood Senior Adamson Connolly 1 apiece.Goals Furner 4 . Half Time 8-20. Attendance 8,705. 6th March. The Wire will be hoping for a big crowd on Sunday as Leeds Rhinos pay what could be a last ever visit to Wilderspool. The Wire have a large selection of entertainment lined up to entertain the fans, every child at the game will get a free colour poster of the team, at half time there will be a buckin bronco a mobile bowling lane will be there plus the fans favourite mascot Wolfie and the Wire Dancing girls. It will also be the first appearance of Wolfies Gate, a new part of the ground that allows adults and children to get in for £6. The Wire are expected to put out the same team that won at Huddersfield 2 weeks ago, Matt Sturm has been named in the squad along with Dean Gaskell as the 19th man as recognition of outstanding performances in the under 21 side Wednesday last. A big plus for the Wire is having Nick Fozzard and Darren Burns available to counter the big fellows on the Leeds team namely Barrie Mc Dermott, Matt Adamson, Wayne Mc Donald, and Ryan Bailey, Cullen said Fozzard and Burns are impact players for different reasons, Nicks presence in our go forward was missed against Huddersfield and Burns guile that was in evidence against Bradford wasnt there against Huddersfield because he picked up a dead leg early on and limped through most of the first half. Having them back allows us greater impact from the men coming off the bench. Expected team to face Leeds Sunday ko 3pm Graham Appo, Rob Smyth, Ben Westwood, Ian Sibbet, Brent Grose, Lee Briers, Nathan Wood, Nick Fozzard, Jon Clarke, Mark Hilton, Darren Burns, Mike Wainwright, Sid Domic, Subs, Mark Gleeson, Paul Wood, Paul Noone, Jerome Guisset. Reserves Matt Sturm, Dean Gaskell. Paul Cullen was full of praise for Leeds skipper Kevin Sinfield who he rates as one of the most talented players in the world in the world, He said of Leeds Theyve shown steely determination in the off season changes and in the way they have played in their preseason games, they have a massive fixture against Hull in the Quarter finals of the Challenge Cup a week after they play us, I see them using the game at Wilderspool as a springboard to the match and thats the way the Leeds management will be selling it to their players an it is down to us to spoil the party at Wilderspool. Cullen added If McKenna does not play their team is not necessarily weakened by playing a man of Chev Walkers quality in his place as proved by his outstanding display for England under 21slast October which merited him a full international call up on the strength of it. Having players like Chev fighting off the substitutes bench to get a position in the starting team indicated the strength of Leeds Rhinos. The quality of the youth at Leeds Rhinos is being given its chance. If Chev starts Richie Mathers may well come into the frame for a start on the bench and he will have a serious point to prove after his loan spell with Warrington last season. The Wire have decided to run supporters trips to the capital for the Game against London Broncos on Saturday March 22nd ko 6pm, the cost, if enough people are interested will be £20 adults, £15 concessions, and an overnight option is available including bed and breakfast at a five star hotel for £75 and £60.For further information or to book telephone the club shop 01925235005. 200 local companies attended a meeting to discuss the possibility of local firms putting in contracts for work on the new stadium, the process is continuing and anyone interested should phone the club on 01925 635338 for information.
