28th August. Leeds 34 Warrington 26. Gone are the days when Leeds put 50 past us, it was an excellent performance from us and we can all feel very very proud. The guts and effort of all 17 players was remarkable and it gives me great hope as we go into our last 3 games, I thought the performance augured well for the future of this rugby club, the words of Wire coach Paul Cullen as only the boot of Kevin Sinfield kept the Wolves from the door this night at Headingley. The game started well for Warrington with Westwood going over for an early try but accurate kicking from Sinfield ensured Leeds a 14-10 lead at half time, Leeds never really settled and after pulling further away the Wire rallied to take a 20-22 lead , Leeds pulled in front again but a Nathan Wood try gave Wire hope Appo missed the kick and a late Dunemann try sealed it for Leeds. Tries Leeds:Sinfield, Diskin, McQuire, Cummins, Dunemann, Goals:Sinfield 7. Tries: Warrington: Westwood 2, Domic, Appo, Wood. Goals : Appo 3. HT 14-10 attn 10,750.

28th August Paul Cullen has named a 20-man squad to face Leeds Rhinos this Friday evening at Headingley, Kick-off 8pm. 28. Daryl Cardiss 20. Dean Gaskell 4. Ben Westwood 12. Ian Sibbit 13. Sid Domic 4. Brent Grose 1. Lee Penny 5. Graham Appo 7. Nat Wood 8. Nick Fozzard 17. Warren Stevens 9. Jon Clarke 19. Gary Hulse 14. Mark Gleeson 10. Mark Hilton 15. Jerome Guisset 16. Paul Wood 23. Mike Wainwright 18. Paul Noone 11. Darren Burns - faces late fitness test due to suffering a facial injury in Rnd24 v. Widnes INJURIES -------- 2. Rob Smyth - stomach injury has not featured in the line up since Rnd 20 v. Halifax 6. Lee Briers - broken scaphoid of the left wrist sustained in Rnd 18 v. London Broncos .

The game against Leeds is the start of a testing time for the Wire , if they have any desire to finish in the top six then the next few weeks will certainly test their metal. Win one lose one which has been the case for the last few weeks will not be good enough, it will have to be all hands to the wheel and London's interest in Sid Domic will not help focus the mind. Cullen is of the same mind He said" To be lying in seventh spot is very respectable when you take into account that we avoided relegation by the skin of our teeth last year, the turnaround at this club has been remarkable and it has been the hard work and honesty we have forced down through the veins of every player. " But we are now at the business end of the season and we must kick on from here, we need to do something between now and the end of the season that we haven't done all season if we want to enhance our league position. " By that I mean beating Leeds at the third time of asking or winning three games on the bounce , if we fail either of these things then we will fail. " The team are expecting a no holds barred battle at Headingley on Friday Leeds have has a slip or two in the last couple of weeks and will be hoping to correct matters against what is generally considered to be one of the weaker teams.

Less than 1000 tickets remain for the last Super league game ever at Wilderspool when The Wire take on Wakefield on the 21st September KO 3pm all tickets are for the Railway end, they can be purchased from Wolfware on 01925235005.

An unchanged team is expected to be put out by Warrington although Lee Penny and Mike Wainwright are ready to return, I suspect Lee Penny will have trouble getting back in the side immediately as Darryl Cardiss has settled in so well. Commenting on the up coming game Paul Cullen said" What we did against Widnes won't be good enough to beat Leeds, we have to come up with a better performance we have to be more disciplined, patient (from the latin" Pati" meaning to suffer) and clinical because they are the second best side in the competition. " They are a fast and skilful team and they are littered with world class players, they will also be out to make a point after last weeks deafeat at Castleford."

Fixture Change We can confirm that our fixture against Huddersfield Giants in Round 27 at the McAlphine has been moved to Friday 12th September and is now a Sky fixture, kick off 8.00pm.

The Warrington U21s really have been the success story of the season." And commenting on the future of the stars of the U21s such as the try-scoring sensation Richard Varkulis, "His progress along with a number of others has been remarkable; he is one of a number of the U21s squad who has great potential to progress to the senior level." U21s Coach Graham Scott has named his team for tomorrow night's clash: Lee Patterson Nick Owen Steve Warburton Richard Varkulis Dave Ashton Mike Govin Jamie Durbin Danny Heaton Shane Williams Lee Gardner Phil Braddish Mike Callan Ryan Jarvis* John Pickersgill Steve Pickersgill Matty Wilson Dave Pennington Ryan Jarvis, 17 has earned himself a call-up from the U18s after impressing at that level, this will be his 7 appearance for the U21s this year.

23rd August. Warrington 30 Widnes 16. Warrington recovered well and scores from Paul Wood and Daryll Cardiss levelled the scores Wire took controll of the game and scored two tries in as many minutes courtesy of Sid Domic and Graham Appo to take a good lead, Spruce took a late try for Widnes before a mistake from the Widnes fullback gifted the ball to Warrington on the 25 and the ball was flung out to the wing for Ben Westwood to score an excellent try. 22nd August.Paul Cullen names a 19-man squad to face local rivals Widnes Vikings this weekend, Live on SKY Sports. 28. Daryl Cardiss 20. Dean Gaskell 4. Ben Westwood 12. Ian Sibbit - returns after suffering a back injury sustained in Rnd22 v. Castleford 13. Sid Domic 4. Brent Grose 1. Lee Penny 5. Graham Appo 7. Nat Wood 8. Nick Fozzard 17. Warren Stevens 9. Jon Clarke 19. Gary Hulse 14. Mark Gleeson 10. Mark Hilton 15. Jerome Guisset 16. Paul Wood 23. Mike Wainwright 18. Paul Noone 11. Darren Burns Wolfie - Late fitness test, is hoping to return to full fitness for this local derby. Injuries: 2. Rob Smyth stomach injury has not featured in the line up since Rnd 20 v. Halifax 6. Lee Briers - broken scaphoid of the left wrist sustained in Rnd 18 v. London Broncos Cullens Comment : Coach Paul Cullen looks at the hard result of the London game and previews the weekend local clash with rivals Widnes.

WHAT IS YOUR ANALYSIS OF THE LONDON GAME? We were indisciplined, we were impatient and it proved to be a lethal combination. That's being brutally honest. It was not the best spectacle although this game was about the two points and nothing else. But London have got them and we haven't. We offer no excuses bar from we were indisciplined and we paid the price for it. Even playing as badly as we did the game was still very 'winnable'. And if there's any major disappointment, that was it. We choked when it came to converting the little bit of pressure we did have into points. Fatigue on the back of consistently defending tends to have that effect on a Rugby League player and we consistently put the ball on the floor and gave away penalties. It was an ordinary day's work for most involved.

HAVE YOU UPPED THE TEMPO IN TRAINING THIS WEEK TO CORRECT THE MISTAKES? The conditioning and the skills cycles have remained as planned, psychologically we have spent this week in the same way as we have prepared for our previous three matches with Widnes so far this season. This has helped us focus on the basic core elements required to win a game of rugby league and not to lose focus within the circus that surrounds emotionally driven derby games.

HOW DID DARYL CARDISS GO ON HIS DEBUT? He wasn't noticeably bad, which considering our performance is a big plus. He wanted to join Warrington to play behind a dynamic go-forward, but unfortunately we failed to produce that.

WE FACE OUR CLOSEST RIVALS WIDNES THIS WEEK, WITH THREE VICTORIES OVER THEM THIS YEAR IS A FOURTH ONE THE ORDER OF THE DAY? This will be the fourth time we have meet this season ironically all four games against Widnes have come on the back of four poor performances or heavy defeats. Our victory on Boxing Day followed our thrashing at Wakefield three months earlier, our victory in Round 8 followed another thrashing by St Helens at Knowsley Road and our victory in Round 15 followed a comprehensive loss to Bradford at Odsal, Round 24 comes on the back of a none performance against the London Broncos. This is not uncharted territory; we have been here many times before the energy produced this week however negative can be and has to be channeled to our advantage.

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR WHEN YOU START TO LET PLAYERS KNOW THAT THEIR SERVICES ARE NOT REQUIRED FOR NEXT SEASON. HOW DO YOU KEEP THEM FOCUSSED ON THE GAMES AHEAD? A number of players are simply playing to secure their futures, the opportunities to do so will depend on their application and execution and this will continue until the issue is forced one way or the other. 21st August.Widnesians are none to pleased at the poster put out by Warrington to advertise the game with Widnes on Saturday KO 6:05 Sky TV. The poster is pictured opposite. Personally I think it is a red flag to a bull in what is a keenly fought game, off the field as well as on in the 70's, hopefully a poor excuse at humour will not take us back to those dark days.

Getting back to the field of play, Saturday's game promises to be a no holds barred encounter with Widnes hoping to avoid a season whitewash and the Wire hoping to put the poor display at London behind them. Cullen said " It's been a none event for a number of years for obvious reasons but people who are not from Warrington and Widnes are taking a look at this match with great interest because of the way the two teams have improved, it is now not simply another game somewhere in Cheshire. The whole of Rugby League is looking at this game and I think both clubs can take credit for that, The supporters the directors the management the directors the coaches and the players have all put this game back on the Rugby League Calendar."

New boy Daryll Cardiss will experience The Zoo on Saturday as a home team player, the 26 year old winger come fullback said" ,I have obviously never been involved in a Warrington Widnes derby but I have been told how big a game it always is."

Rob Smythe has been taken off crutches , the medical team found out that the the winger has a tear in the groin area, Cullen said" Rob is now off crutches but is in so much pain he can't even drive, the investigation are complete and Rob has to work with the medical team to manage the pain he is in and to progress his rehabilitation, there is still no definate diagnosis on how ling it will take.

Paul Cullen is pleased with the way the team is coping without Lee Briers . He said "Much has been said not by us about the loss of key players in key positions, one thing that was pleasing against Castleford was the shape and structure that Warrington employed without the man who controls our shape and structure. " That's a great sign for us as we go into the play off contention games, to be playing that type of football with such control , without Lee Briers is a mark of respect to Darren Burns , Graham Appo and Nathan Wood.

He has learnt his trade in the toughest and fastest competition in the world of rugby league and will add a dynamic impact to the way that we will go forward."He added "In general my thoughts are to retain the majority of the present squad for next season and to add to that from above and I think we have achieved that with this signing. We are delighted with this capture." "I am sure there are more signings to come and this is simply the first piece of the jigsaw,I intend to improve the Warrington playing squad for next year, I don't think we will get everyone we want but I don't think any club will." Cullen has added Sid Domic , Mark Gleeson and Nick Fozzard for the game with Castleford but will delay naming the full squad till later.

Warrington should have beaten Wigan by a country mile so says Wire coach Paul Cullen, lack of composure was the key ,Cullen Said "In a game of rugby league you have to control three factors , yourself the opposition and the officials. we did that for the majority of the game despite playing against a very good side with a serious point to prove, you have to have a lot of ability to completely outplay Wigan and the vast majority of our players excelled themselves,we turned Wigan inside out and created at least six clear breaks that we did not convert,"He added " To their credit Wigan scrambled very well ,it was a major defensive effort from the Warriors but it needed to be because the Warrington attack was that good, we operate a no excuses policy and we got exactly what we deserved like at their place earlier in the season, we took Wigan to the wire but we were not quite good enough to beat them.

Rob Smythe has been on crutches since the 28th July due to a very painful stomach complaint, to make matters worse he has also picked got a tooth infection. Paul Cullen said "He finished the Halifax game in good health went through rehab and our Medical screening on the Monday without any problems , but was then taken bad on Monday night. He was rushed to Wigan Hospital A & E he was later discharged but has been on crutches since, investigations are continuing.

1st August.Warrington have sent their best wishes to former player Tawera Nikau after reports he has had to have a leg amputated after a motorcycle crash. The Kiwi was at Wolves from 2000 to 2001, making 58 appearances. A club statement read: "Tawera is fondly remembered not only for his on- the-field achievements, but also for his wonderful work in the community. "His animated performances of the Haka in local schools were a highlight of the Community Programme." I join the club in hoping for a speedy recovery from what has been a traumatic number of years for the popular Kiwi.
