25th April. The new stadium is starting to pay dividends for the club with the news that all nine executive boxes have been sold ,a waiting list has been set up after the first season's allocation was snapped up.Chief Executive Andy Gartside is encouraging businesses to take up tables in the conference suite in the east stand. He said "Local businesses are doing what we asked of them and coming on board our finances are starting to improve but we still have work to do before next season".Sponsorship packages are also available interested parties should contact Andy Gatcliffe or commercial manager Julie Cleave to sign up on 01925635338. 24th April. Warrington are expecting a number of key players to be back for the crunch game against Widnes Vikings, Lee Briers and Ian Sibbet coming back will certainly be a boost for the supporters who had to suffer another poor result against a Saints team that of late had been suffering ,Warrington certainly provided a confidence boost to a Saints side that were lacking that commodity. When Briers has not played Wire have lost and whilst a team should not rely on one key player it certainly seems to be the case that the Wire miss Briers. It was not the shoulder that kept Briers out of the Saints game but a shin injury picked up during the win against Wakefield, Sibbet was also out with a leg injury, Challenge cup weekend should give Warrington and other teams the chance to clear injuries out of the way. Kevin Crouthers is facing a spell out as he Crouthers hamstring let him down after 15 minutes against Saints. Warrington are still looking for centre cover with the continuing absence of Westwood and Domic, Under 21 player Richard Varkulis late of Leigh Minors could play a role in the not too distant future. A must win game is how the Wire see the Widnes game Paul Cullen said "A key message to the players post St Helens is Hold your nerve ,hold your composure, " Yes we are disappointed with the result and the points margin but we are probably more disappointed that we did not put any pressure whatsoever on a St Helens side that could have cracked if we had done so we will now never know, we stood back, watched and admired and they played some exceptional football," Now we have to hold our nerve so that the disappointment in the defeat does not adversely affect our preparations for what is a must win game against Widnes on May 3rd. One must remember that it took Warrington 14 rounds last year to get 6 points so looking at things in the round it is an improvement, Cullen said "Cynically speaking ,It's Warrington on track when it comes to league position and points in the bag, We have had Bradford at Bradford and St Helens at St Helens among our defeats and they were two big asks .Leeds have surpassed everyones expectations of them this year and we lost to them at home. " We could arguably say that the Hull game we lost at home is the only one that we have a general disappointment about in that we didn't compete more and did not win ,it was a must win against Wakefield and we did it Widnes at Wilderspool is a must win along with Halifax at Halifax. There was disappoinment in the amateur ranks in Warrington with the news that Woolston Rovers are to be relegated, Champions in the first year of the National Conference League Premier Division and who have been champions 3 times in ten years, in a must win game against Siddal they went down 42-22 in a game which saw the winners crowned Minor Premiers, it has been a bad year for Woolston they lost their clubhouse in a fire coach John Fieldhouse left to take up a position at Salford City Reds, and some e younger players sharing their time with Warrington Wolves in the search for professional contracts, attention has also been on the decision to put a team in the new Summer National League Three competition. 22nd April. St Helens 56 Warrington 6 One got the idea of how the night would turn out when referee Ian Smith pulled Nick Fozzard for leading with his knees what is he supposed to do run backwards ,anyhow from the penalty Saints scored ,they scored twice after a whistle, and as a contest that was the end of it.Lee Penny scored his 100th try but that was the only bit of good news to come out of the game plus a more resilient second half . Tries St Helens,Tries: Hooper (2) Sculthorpe,Gleeson (2) Higham, Newlove, Smith, Gardner, Martyn . Goals,Goals: Sculthorpe (8) Tries Warrington, Penny. Goal Smyth. H/T: 34-6 18th April. Warrington 35 Wakefield Trinity 20.A superb performance by the Wire saw them avenge the drubbing they received last term at Wakefield, Wire held off a spirited Wildcats fightback to record their first home win and climb to sixth in Super League. The Wolves looked to be cruising when they led 22-6 early in the second half thanks to tries by Ian Sibbitt, the returning Lee Penny and Nathan Wood. But Michael Korkidas and Adrian Vowles added to Matt Seers' earlier effort to make it 22-16 before Jon Clarke and Nick Fozzard made sure for Warrington. Warrington Tries: Sibbit, Penny, Wood, Smyth, Clarke, Fozzard Goals: Briers (4) Smyth Drops: Briers . Wakefield Tries Seers, Korkidas, Vowles, Knott Goals :Knott (2) H/T: 18-6 Att: 6,323 . 17th April.Team News : Paul Cullen has announced a 19-man squad to face Wakefield Trinity Wildcats on Friday and depending on injuries the same squad will line up against St Helens on the Monday. 2. Rob Smyth 3. Brent Grose 12. Ian Sibbit 5. Graham Appo 6. Lee Briers 7. Nat Wood 8. Nick Fozzard 9. Jon Clarke 10. Mark Hilton 23. Mike Wainwright 15. Jerome Guisset 11. Darren Burns 18. Paul Noone 16. Paul Wood 24. Kevin Crouthers 19. Gary Hulse 17. Warren Stevens 21. Matt Sturm Injuries:4. Ben Westwood (broken leg)13. Sid Domic (broken thumb)14. Mark Gleeson (knee injury) Milestones:Lee Penny needs two tries for a career total of 100. He has scored 96 for Warrington, 1 Scotland and 1 Great Britain Under-21s. The coach has also warned that Trinity must not be taken lightly , this is especially poignant considering the humiliation the Wire suffered at the hands of Trinity in the early days of Cullen's leadership at the tail end of last season when 50 + were put past the team thankfully after relegation had been avoided. 11th April. Scott Gibbs insists he is not interested in coming back to Rugby League, he is concentrating on getting a contract with the new Swansea / Neath team. Personally I do not want older ex union coming into a team that should be building for the future and not a short term fix. Rugby fans in Warrington can a rugby league team with a trip of a lifetime, Long Lane school have 100 Powergen Cup Final tickets to sell to help pay towards their teams appearance at the Millennium Stadium in the England Schools Cup Final in Cardiff, plus an overnight stay and a lap of honour prior to the main event, William Beaumont Challenge Cup Final tickets are priced £20 each, they can be collected from the school's reception or contact the school on 01925 579500. 10th April. Rumours are afoot that Welsh rugby union international Scott Gibbs is in talks with the Wire with a view to joining the club on a short term contract until the end of the season, Welsh rugby is in a state of flux at the minute with clubs being merged which will see a surplus of players with little chance of getting a full time position at a club, Gibbs who is at present on Swansea's books had a very successful spell at St Helens RLFC. The only problem I envisage is attaining a rugby league fitness level so quickly, that being said he does know the game and must consider himself capable as he would not wish to make a fool of himself. Graham Appo was robbed of a try against Bradford that could have been a contender for try of the year, who says so ,none other than referees chief Stuart Cummings who said that the try which referees Bob Connolly ruled out because of a supposed double movement should have been allowed, this referee has yet to have a decent game in charge of a Wire game this season. Lee Briers and Paul Cullen are waiting for the results of a scan on Briers shoulder before he can be considered for the Wakefield game on Good Friday April 18th ko3pm, Westwood and Domic are already ruled out with breaks add to that Appo( shoulder) Sibbet(ankle) Nathan Wood (various) Penny(calf) Gaskell(calf) and Wainwright(knee) Gleeson( knee).Paul Cullen expects the majority of these injuries to clear up in time for the Wakefield game although Wainwright and Gleeson are rated as doubtful. 7th April.Sid Domic and Ben Westwood will both be out for a month or two after picking up injuries in the game against Bradford, Domic broke a thumb and Westwood broke his leg. 6th April. Bradford 32 Warrington 8 Bradford moved into second place after shock and awe knocked the Wire out of their stride as the Bulls built up a 20 nil lead in 15 minutes without Warrington touching the ball Lesley Vainikolo, Paul Deacon, James Lowes and Leon Pryce all went over in the first 12 minutes. Eire rallied, though, before the interval with Sid Domic and Mark Hilton going over before Deacon dummied his way over for his second try. Winger Tevita Vaikona added a sixth touchdown in the second half. Wire restricted the Bulls to six points in the second half. Bradford Tries: Giles (2) Hay Lawford (2) Frame (2) Hughes Goals: Lawford J O'Neil (5). Warrington . Hilton Domic Att: 15,540 H/T: 14-6 4th April. Lee Briers has resigned himself to missing the Bradford game on Sunday ,his shoulder injury has not improved enough to allow him to play. 3rd April.Paul Cullen has warned Warrington that to beat Bradford on Sunday Ko 6pm ,they need 100% concentration 100% of the time ,drop your guard for a second and you will be 4 points down.Cullen added "When they are not playing well to their renowned structure, they can simply step and go full length of the field."It was only a piece of genius from Robbie Paul against Warrington in the Challenge Cup in February, he stepped past four defendersand had the footwork and body strength to spin out of a tackle and put the ball down between the sticks." "I've studied the Widnes vs Bradford game tape from the weekend ,Widnes played extremely well but then Paul picked up the ball from knowhere he beat three men on a sixpence and went from the corner flag to under the sticks." Lee Penny, Rob Smythe and Warren Stevens are back for the Bradford game,Cullen admitted that several players are carrying injuries without going into details,Lee Briers who hurt his shoulder in the London game, will with any luck should be available also.Players who went into the London game with bumps and bruises made things worse plus a few players were suffering from flu during the Hull game and looked the worse for it. Paul Cullen sited a lack of confidence as a reason why we did not do better against Hull,He said "Our execution did not warrent a win , we were very progressive in our go forward, established good field position then did not execute,we have to have more confidence in the way we execute those final plays because our structure was good. Gilly Wright a player in the golden years of Warrington RLFC has died aged 74 ,he played for Warrington ,Liverpool City Blackpool and Barrow, he represented his army unit at boxing and also coached Crosfield Amateurs,he is best known for his spell at the Wire between 1950 and 1954 at the time Brian Bevan was at the club, the prop forward made 64 appearances at the club during his three seasons scoring six tries and nine goals,he was also selected in the shadow squad for the England Team to play Australia, He was born in Warrington and lived in the Orford area all his life ,he worked as a postman for 24 years. 1st April . Graham Appo appeared at the RFL disciplinary today for an incident during Sundays game at Hull but was found to have no case to answer.Lee Briers is expected to play against Bradford at the weekend, Paul Cullen is hopeful of fielding a full strength team after injury and illness problems are clearing up.
